What is Unified Communications as a Service?

Unified communications as a service (UCaaS) is the evolution of unified communications (UC). UC refers to an integrated communication system, where everything from voice calls to faxing is hosted in the cloud and accessed through an internet connection.

It means that instead of having an actual PABX and fax machine, there are virtual counterparts hosted in the data centre of your internet service provider (ISP) and you pay a subscription for access.

UCaaS is a scalable, economical way to put big enterprise phone tools in the hands of all organisations, without the hassle of installing, registering and updating software for each employee.

How does UCaaS work?

Traditional, office-based PABX phone systems consist of a physical switchboard wired into phone lines.

With UCaaS, the internet is the phone line and the switchboard is a software program running on an ISP server. By going virtual and hosting in the cloud, organisations make operational gains in:

  • Employee mobility
  • Scalability
  • Security
  • Ongoing cost savings
  • Installation

UCaaS gives any SME the communications capability of much larger enterprises for voice, video, fax, text, call handling and mobile apps.

How do I access unified communications as a service?

With UCaaS, every time a user wants to make a voice call their IP address is sent to the digital phone system in the cloud.

Features like call waiting, redirecting and voicemail are all software-based and in the cloud, which means they are accessible no matter where you or your employees are.

The data produced is also stored in the cloud and you access it through the internet, just as if it were stored on your own hard drive.

How is UCaaS charged?

With UCaaS, you pay to access ‘seats’ on a monthly basis, and you can scale up and down as needed.

Because the communication software is hosted online, there’s none of the hardware costs associated with office-based phone systems. And because of its scalability, you can add more virtual phones or remove them as your business evolves.
